Code Books
New Building Code Goes Into Effect March 9, 2011 PDF Print E-mail
The Michigan Residential Code (MRC) will take effect on Wednesday, March 9, 2011.  The Michigan Residential Code book will be available on January 19.

As we have for the past two code cycles, the MAHB has partnered with the Bureau of Construction Codes to use the state’s purchasing power to provide a discounted price for all of the 2009 Michigan codes.  The soft cover edition of the 2009 Michigan Residential code is priced at $81.50.  Click here to purchase.  Note: You must enter code provided on link and discount will not show until checkout.

However, there is a problem regarding the energy conservation portion of the MRC. The MRC is a “stand-alone” document, intended to contain everything needed, including plumbing, electrical, mechanical and energy requirements, to build one-and two-family homes and townhouses not more than three stories in height.  The 2009 MRC does not contain the Chapter 11 energy conservation requirements.

Where Can I Get a Copy of the 2009 Michigan Codes PDF Print E-mail

The 2009 Michigan Building/Residential, Rehabilitation and Energy Codes became effective March 9, 2011. While the MAHB is not selling code books this year, many local HBAs are. Your local HBA is the first place to look. Remember, having a copy of the current 2009 Michigan Residential Code is required to renew your builders’ license.

If your local HBA is not selling the codes there are three other ways to get copies of the code books.

Free Copy of the Residential Portion of the Michigan Uniform Energy Code PDF Print E-mail

Because of errors made by the department, the residential energy code rules were not published in the 2009 edition of the Michigan Residential Code. Purchasing a copy of the Michigan Uniform Energy Code from the ICC will cost $47.50.

We have a workaround to enable members to get a free copy of the residential portion of the MUEC.  Please be aware it is not as easy to do as we would like.

Which Code Applies When and To What? PDF Print E-mail
Every time a new code goes into effect there is considerable confusion about which code needs to be followed when a project in underway but not completed. The Bureau of Construction Codes has issued an advisory on “How Projects are Impacted When the Michigan Construction Codes are Updated or Modified” which is reproduced below.

“While the code sets forth the provisions for plan review and permit application, a written application may not be submitted at the time of preliminary discussions and this causes some confusion regarding which code is applicable at the time of a change in the codes during mid-design or when the design of a project is nearing completion.
